The Fan Buying Guide

Five specs decide whether you'll like a fan: how much air it moves, how loud it is doing it, what kind of motor drives it, whether it fits the room, and what it costs to run. Everything else is styling. Here's each one in plain English.

What does CFM actually mean?

CFM, cubic feet per minute, is how much air a fan moves. It's the closest thing fans have to a horsepower number, and the spec manufacturers most like to omit on weaker models. Rough bearings: a small desk fan moves a few hundred CFM, a good tower fan several hundred to around a thousand, and a box fan or high-velocity floor fan can exceed two thousand.

Two cautions. First, CFM is measured at top speed, the speed you'll rarely use at night. Second, not all manufacturers measure it the same way, so treat small differences between brands as noise. Big differences are real.

How loud is too loud?

Fan noise is measured in decibels (dB), and the scale is logarithmic: 60 dB isn't twice 30 dB, it's vastly louder. Practical anchors:

  • Under ~40 dB: library-quiet, what good bedroom fans achieve on low.
  • 40–55 dB: noticeable but easy to live with, most towers on medium.
  • 55 dB and up: you'll raise your voice. Box fans and high-velocity fans at speed.

The character of the noise matters as much as the level. A steady whoosh fades into the background, and some people seek it out (see fans for sleeping), while clicks, rattles, and motor whines never do. Which type of fan do I need?

  • Tower fans: tall, slim, oscillating. The living-room and bedroom default, with the best feature sets, smallest footprint, moderate airflow.
  • Pedestal / standing fans: a fan head on an adjustable pole. More airflow than a tower, more presence in the room, height-adjustable to aim at a bed or couch.
  • Box fans: cheap, flat, powerful, loud. Unbeatable air-per-dollar for windows, garages, and airing rooms out.
  • Desk & tabletop fans: personal airflow for one person at close range.
  • Air circulators: compact fans engineered to throw a focused beam of air across a room and stir the whole volume, rather than fan one person.
  • Neck, handheld & stroller fans: battery-powered personal cooling. Judge them on battery hours and weight, not CFM.

DC vs. AC motors: worth the upcharge?

Most cheap fans use AC motors: simple, proven, but with three or four fixed speeds and most of their noise at the low end. DC-motor fans cost more and bring three real advantages: many more speed steps (often 4–12), much quieter low-speed operation, and a fraction of the power draw. If the fan will run all night in a bedroom, the DC upcharge is usually the best money in the whole purchase. For a garage box fan, skip it.

How do I size a fan to a room?

Think in terms of air changes: a fan should be able to move the room's volume of air several times an hour to make it feel different. A 12×12 bedroom (about 1,000 cubic feet) feels noticeably better with a few hundred CFM. A large open living area needs a pedestal fan, circulator, or multiple placements. A small tower in a great room just decorates the corner.

Placement beats power

A medium fan aimed across the longest open path of the room, or pointed to bounce air off a wall, usually outperforms a stronger fan stuck in a corner. For cross-ventilation, one fan pulling in at a cool window and one pushing out at a warm one beats two fans blowing inward.

What makes a good sleeping fan?

Three things: a genuinely quiet low end (see noise), a smooth noise character that works as white noise rather than against it, and controls you can live with at 2 a.m., meaning a dim or defeatable display, a remote, and a timer. Can a fan actually blow cold air?

Strictly, no. A fan moves air, it doesn't chill it. The cooling you feel is your own sweat evaporating faster, which is real but limited. Products marketed as blowing "cold air" are one of three things: a strong fan (honest, effective), an evaporative cooler that adds water mist (works in dry climates, adds humidity in muggy ones), or a small thermoelectric gadget (mostly underwhelming). What does a fan cost to run?

Almost nothing, and that's the point. A typical tower fan draws 30–60 watts; running one 8 hours a night for a summer costs a few dollars at average U.S. electricity rates. A DC-motor fan on low can draw under 5 watts. Compare that to a window air conditioner at 500–1,500 watts, and the strategy writes itself: use fans to raise the temperature at which you need the AC at all.

How do I keep a fan from getting gross?

Dust buildup is the main reason fans get louder and weaker over time. Grilled fans (box, pedestal, desk) open with a screwdriver. Wipe the blades and grille a couple of times a season. Tower fans mostly don't open, so compressed air through the intake vents is the realistic maintenance.
